Renée van de Schaft wins 25th Literature and Translation Competition

On Wednesday 17 may 2017, the award ceremony for the 25th DISDH Literature and Translation Competition took place. Once again this year, we were very pleased that so many participants and sponsors took part in the competition. Renée van de Schaft from the Montessori Lyceum Herman Jordan Zeist is the 25th winner of the Literature and Translation Competition 2017 organised and staged by the German International School The Hague (DISDH). In this year's competition, Renée stood up against more than 80 other students from all over the Netherlands.

The award ceremony, at which the young Austrian author Vea Kaiser was present, was held amidst a festive setting with music, theater, guest speakers and most importantly, the award presentation itself. After a musical opening and speeches by the DISDH School Principal Uwe Hinxlage, the cultural representative of the Austrian Embassy Daria Bouwman and the Ambassador of the Republic of Austria to the Netherlands Dr. Heidemaria Gürer, Vea Kaiser was invitied on stage to give insight and read from her recently published novel “Makarionissi oder Die Insel der Seligen ". At last, it was time for the awarding of the prizes and a tandem reading. Vea Kaiser read a passage from her book "Blasmusikpop oder Wie die Wissenschaft in die Berge kam" followed by Renée van de Schaft reading her winning Dutch translation of the same passage. Afterwards, all the prize winners were invited back onto the stage for a joint photo. The evening was rounded out by borrel enjoyed by all.

DISDH would like to thank all participants for their contributions and their interest in this competition. Sponsors for the competition are also gratefully acknowledged. Thank you as well to all the organisers and helpers who made this 25th consecutive competition possible.
